Unlike benzene, phenol will react with bromine without the aid of a halogen carrier and at room temperature.
Why does phenol react?
Phenol can react as it has a higher electron density.This is because the lone pair of electrons from the p-orbital in the oxygen, overlaps with benzenes pi bonds.
The increased electron density can polarise the bromine molecules.
