Before the liquid nitrogen starts filling up in the dewar, a lot of gaseous nitrogen flies out. Everything from the valve to the dewar has to get to -200˚C before any liquid will collect. The black tube gets frozen in that position and you can’t bend it out when you finish, hence putting the box underneath.
